DES270 Visual Communication I
Visual Communications I is an introduction to the elements and principles of design. In the course students are given a series of exercises and real-world design problems. Students will become familiar with methods and materials involved in the production of graphic design work. In the ideation phase of each assignment students were encouraged to utilize visual analogy and metaphor. Classroom sessions involved critiques, lectures, and demonstrations. Lecture material included discussions on the nature of visual communications, printing processes, desktop publishing, and historical trends and influences in design.
DES271 Typography
The goal of this course is to present the nature of type as a fundamental tool of graphic communication. Lectures dealt with type through its history and classification. Students also reviewed the design of type and designing with type. Students explored modern, contemporary and experimental approaches to the use of type, as well as recent explosions of typography for digital/mobile devices. Assignments will develop the ability to design with type alone, with type and image, and in different contexts. Some assignments also incorporated hand-rendering techniques to express the concepts.
DES277 Computer Graphics I
Computer Graphics I is the first course in the Communication Design at Buffalo State that is primarily computer based. But, the computer is only a tool and students learn that what they get out of the computer is what they put into it. Students were introduced to two of the most widely used programs in computer aided graphic design—Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Students learn, once mastered, these industry-standard programs provide the designer with tools to create just about any publication or design project imaginable. Students also touch on several other programs, including Photoshop, but only as a supplement to this course.

The projects will be comprehensive and presented in formats encountered in the “real world.” Advanced problems in advertising, publication, and packaging design. Materials, techniques, and computer processes used in preparation of visual and design presentations/mechanicals. Emphasis on individual solutions to problems typical of those confronting the professional graphic designer.
